The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 amid allegations of a paper leak.
The court emphasised the importance of the exam's integrity and stated that answers are needed from the NTA due to the impact on the exam's sanctity.
During the session, a vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah addressed the NTA, pointing out that it is not enough to declare the exam sacrosanct simply because it has been conducted. The court expressed that the sanctity of the exam has been compromised, warranting further investigation and clarification from the testing agency.
Advocate Mathews J Nedumpara, representing the petitioners, urged the bench to halt the ongoing counselling process. Despite the plea, the Supreme Court decided not to interfere with the counselling process at this stage, scheduling the next hearing for July 8. The bench clarified, “Let the counselling start, we are not stopping the counselling,” indicating that the counselling process would proceed as planned.
The Supreme Court is addressing multiple petitions that call for the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 exam, citing allegations of paper leaks and other irregularities. The petitioners are seeking a fresh examination to be conducted to ensure fairness and transparency. The NEET-UG candidates have also raised concerns about the irregularities in awarding compensatory marks for lost time during the examination.
Several petitions have been submitted to the apex court, requesting that the NEET-UG 2024 results be recalled and the examination be conducted anew. The allegations include paper leaks and malpractice during the test, which was held on May 5. Despite these allegations, the NTA has firmly denied any irregularities.
NEET-UG, overseen by the NTA, is a crucial examination for students seeking admission into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in both government and private institutions across India. The outcome of this examination determines the future of thousands of aspiring medical students, making the integrity of the process vital.
As the situation unfolds, the Supreme Court's involvement highlights the significance of addressing the allegations seriously. The court's decision to seek answers from the NTA underscores the need for transparency and accountability in the administration of such a critical examination.
The upcoming hearing on July 8 will be pivotal in determining the course of action regarding the NEET-UG 2024 examination and the allegations of irregularities surrounding it.
