SC asks Delhi HC for update on 1984 riots cases.

The Supreme Court has directed the Registry of the Delhi High Court to submit a progress report on four suo moto revision petitions pending before the High Court in connection with the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots murder cases.

A Bench comprising Justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan also instructed the Central and Delhi governments to file Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) against various acquittals in cases that had previously been dismissed by the Delhi High Court.

The matter has been scheduled for the next hearing on 25 March this year.

The Court was hearing a petition filed in 2016 by S. Gurlad Singh Kahlon, who sought an investigation into 51 murder cases that occurred during the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots in Delhi.

In response to Kahlon’s plea, the Supreme Court had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Justice S. N. Dhingra to re-examine 186 cases that had been reopened.

During the previous hearing on 17 February, the Supreme Court had directed that various SLPs due to be filed should be placed before the Chief Justice of India for a decision on whether they should be tagged along with Kahlon’s plea.

The Court had also instructed the Delhi government to ensure that the SLPs were filed within six weeks.

In its latest order, the Supreme Court acknowledged that the Delhi High Court Registry had submitted a report as per the February directive.

However, it noted that the Registry had yet to file a status report regarding the four pending suo moto revision petitions. Consequently, the Court has now directed the High Court Registry to file a progress report on these cases.

Senior Advocate H. S. Phoolka represented the petitioner, Kahlon, along with Advocates Amarjeet Singh Bedi, Gaganmeet Singh Sachdeva, and Varun Chugh.
