The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The apex court, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, will hear the case on August 20, according to the court's cause list.
The incident, which occurred in a seminar hall at the state-run hospital, has triggered widespread protests and demands for justice.
The Calcutta High Court recently handed over the investigation from Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), reflecting the gravity of the case.
In the meantime, the CBI has commenced a psychological assessment of the accused, under the supervision of five experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL).
In response to the public outrage, Kolkata Police have imposed restrictions, barring gatherings near R G Kar Medical College until August 24, to maintain order.
