The Supreme Court will on Monday resume hearing several petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls.
The revision process, aimed at cleaning up the voter list, has triggered sharp political and legal debates ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
According to the causelist published on the apex court’s website, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi will take up the pleas against the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) order directing the SIR exercise in Bihar on September 8.
Earlier, the Justice Surya Kant-led Bench declined to extend the September 1 deadline set by the ECI for filing claims and objections to the draft rolls published after the first phase of the SIR.
The court’s decision came after the ECI assured that objections filed even after September 1, but before the last date of nominations, would still be taken into account for inclusion in the electoral rolls.
The petitions before the court include those filed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other political parties, who had sought an extension of the ECI’s deadline for submitting claim forms.

In its September 1 order, the Justice Surya Kant-led Bench observed: “The process of consideration of claims will continue till the last date of nominations. Let the claims/objections be continued to be filed.”
The Bench also asked the Bihar State Legal Services Authority to deploy para-legal volunteers (PLVs) to help voters and political parties in filing online claims, objections or corrections.
Meanwhile, sources have said the ECI is considering carrying out the SIR exercise across the country and has called a meeting of all state Chief Electoral Officers (CEO) in Delhi on September 10.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the Election Commissioners and other senior poll body officers are scheduled to attend the meeting.
