Uddhav says verdict to initiate return of Kashmiri Pandits
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court ruling on Article 370 and wondered whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi would \"guarantee\" the safe return of Kashmiri Pandits to their erstwhile home state.
He demanded that elections be held soon in Jammu and Kashmir as directed by the apex court.
The Supreme Court unanimously upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370 bestowing special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and directed restoration of statehood \"at the earliest\" as well as elections to the assembly by September 30 next year.
\"We welcome the verdict of the Supreme Court. We had supported the move when Article 370 was scrapped. We also welcome the SC's directives to conduct elections by next September. We hope that elections are held soon and people get to vote in a free atmosphere,\" Thackeray told reporters on the premises of Vidhan Bhavan here.
Yogi: SC verdict will strengthen spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat'
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said the Supreme Court's verdict to uphold the government's decision to abrogate Article 370 is going to strengthen the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat'.
Adityanath, in a post on X, said, \"The decision given by the Honourable Supreme Court regarding Section 370 and 35A is commendable. This is going to strengthen the spirit of 'Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat'.\"
\"From 25 crore people of the state, I thank for the historic work of connecting Jammu and Kashmir with the mainstream of the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the spirit of 'Nation First',\" he added.
\"Under the successful leadership of the PM, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh will set new standards of good governance, development and prosperity. Jai Hind!\" Adityanath said.
While upholding the government's decision on Article 370, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court also directed that statehood to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir be restored at the earliest and said steps should be taken to conduct elections to the Assembly in the Union Territory by September 30 next year.
J-K BJP welcomes SC verdict upholding Article 370 abrogation
Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina on Monday hailed the Supreme Court's verdict upholding the abrogation of Article 370, saying \"we honour and respect the judgement in letter and spirit\".
However, former president of J-K Congress G A Mir said the party is going through the verdict and would issue a statement accordingly. He said the apex court should have given a time frame for the restoration of the statehood and ensured special safeguards for the jobs and land for the locals of the Union Territory.
The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Centre's decision of August 2019 to abrogate Article 370, which bestowed a special status on the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and said steps should be taken to conduct elections to the Assembly by September 30 next year.
The apex court also directed that statehood to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir be restored at the earliest.
\"We are proud of our country, constitution and our judiciary which is one of the best in the world. We respect and honour the judgement of the supreme court in true letter and spirit,\" Raina told PTI.
