Security forces and terrorists engaged in a fresh exchange of gunfire on Sunday evening in the Khaned area of Jammu's Udhampur district.
This encounter follows a larger anti-terror operation that began last Tuesday in the Khaned and Basantgarh Police Station areas.
Contact between the terrorists and security forces was first established on Tuesday, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire.
The ongoing operation takes place in a region characterised by dense forests and challenging terrain. On Sunday, officials reported another brief gunfire exchange between security forces and terrorists.
Officials confirmed that the anti-terror operation, which has been active for several days, intensified following the latest exchange.
It’s suspected that terrorist groups are hiding in the upper, forest-covered areas of Udhampur, leading to extensive security operations in the region.
“Following specific inputs, contact was re-established with terrorists during dusk hours today at Khaned. The cordon remains intact while deliberated searches are being undertaken,” wrote the Udhampur DIG on the X handle.
Security forces and terrorists also exchanged fire on Sunday morning in Kishtwar for a brief period, following which search operations in the upper reaches of the Kishtwar forests were conducted.
After a brief period of peace following the abrogation of Article 370, terror activities have resurfaced in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region.
