The 2027 Census feels like a genuine step forward for India, primarily because the traditional wait for a knock on the door is no longer the only way to get involved. For the first time, the government has introduced a Self-Enumeration (SE) option, allowing you to handle the paperwork yourself via your phone or laptop. It is remarkably efficient, with most families managing to tick everything off in less than 15 minutes.

This digital rollout is the core of Phase I, which focuses on House Listing and the Housing Census. It essentially maps out how people are living— covering everything from building materials to household gadgets. If you fancy skipping the doorstep interview, here is how to navigate the portal.

Getting started: Login

First, head over to se.census.gov.in. Once there, pick your State or Union Territory from the list. You’ll need to clear a CAPTCHA—there’s an audio version if the text is a bit blurry— then hit "Verify & Proceed."

From here, you’ll need to provide the name of the Head of the Household and a mobile number. An email address is optional but worth adding for your records. A six-digit OTP will land on your phone; pop that in, select your preferred language, and you’re in.

House and household

The first formal part, Section A, deals with the physical structure of your home. You’ll be asked about the materials used for your floors, walls, and roof, as well as the general condition of the building. Just double-check the pop-up summary before moving on.

Section B pivots to the people inside. You’ll record the total number of residents, confirm the gender of the household head, and note the social category. This bit also covers house ownership, the number of rooms at your disposal, and the number of married couples living under your roof.

Amenities and assets

Section C is essentially a health check for the household’s infrastructure. You will need to specify your main source of drinking water, lighting, and kitchen facilities. It also asks about your drainage system, the type of latrine you have access to, and what you use for cooking fuel.

Following this, Section D moves on to your belongings. It is a simple checklist: do you have a TV, radio, or internet access? Do you own a laptop, a bicycle, a car, or a scooter? You’ll even be asked about the main cereal your family consumes. Finally, confirm your mobile number one last time for any future updates.

Final step: Submission

Before you hit the final button, the portal will show you a full summary. It is well worth taking a minute to scan through this to catch any typos or errors. If it all looks correct, click "Submit."

Once done, a confirmation will flash up on your screen along with a unique Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID). This part is crucial: take a screenshot or write this ID down immediately. When the census enumerator eventually visits your area, you simply hand them this ID to prove you’ve already done the work. If you lose it, you’ll likely have to go through the entire interview process from scratch on your doorstep.
