Former Congress, BJP leaders join AAP ahead of elections.

Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has seen a significant influx of leaders and workers from both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Several prominent figures, including Mamta Verma, Banwari Lal Upadhyay, Mohammad Ikram, and Bhumika Singh, have joined AAP, marking a pivotal moment in the party’s preparations for the upcoming elections.

The joining of these key leaders was announced during a special event on Saturday, attended by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi.

Mamta Verma, a former Congress corporation councilor candidate from the Wazirpur assembly, along with Banwari Lal Upadhyay and Mohammad Ikram, both former Congress corporation candidates from Kirari assembly, were among the high-profile additions to AAP.

The list of new members also includes Bhumika Singh, a former BJP corporation councilor candidate from Seemapuri assembly.

These moves reflect the growing dissatisfaction with traditional political parties and a shift towards AAP, particularly as the city’s electorate becomes increasingly focused on tangible governance outcomes.

Atishi, who welcomed the new members into the party fold, emphasised the success of AAP’s initiatives, which have resonated with the public.

She highlighted key policies such as free electricity, accessible water, improved government schools and hospitals, and women’s bus travel as major factors driving the party’s growing popularity.

She attributed the surge in AAP’s membership to the positive results of these initiatives, which have directly benefited the citizens of Delhi.

In her address, Atishi expressed that the influence of Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership and his politics of honest governance had contributed significantly to the growing support for AAP.

She noted that the party’s appeal has expanded beyond traditional party lines, with people from diverse backgrounds joining in recognition of AAP’s commitment to addressing the real issues affecting the citizens.

The Delhi Chief Minister pointed out that the AAP’s success is visible in the daily lives of residents.

“Delhi now enjoys 24-hour electricity, with zero electricity bills for many. Government schools have outpaced private institutions in quality, and the Mohalla clinics provide free medicine and treatment to all,” she said.

Atishi also touched upon AAP’s commitment to providing free pilgrimages for senior citizens, further highlighting the party’s social welfare initiatives.

Atishi noted that several Congress leaders, especially from constituencies like Wazirpur and Kirari, had been drawn to AAP because of its tangible impact on local communities.

She mentioned that Banwari Lal Upadhyay, a veteran leader from Congress, who had been a part of the party for over four decades, had decided to join AAP, alongside many others who had seen the party’s commitment to progress and good governance.

In Seemapuri Assembly, where Bhumika Singh, a former BJP leader, also joined AAP, Atishi highlighted the widespread disillusionment with the BJP’s approach to governance.

Singh, who had previously been the District General Secretary of BJP’s Mahila Morcha and a candidate for the corporation elections from Sundar Nagri, was another testament to the party’s appeal across political lines.
