Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party will return to power in Assam under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with the “largest ever mandate”.
Addressing a youth convention organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Guwahati, Shah urged people to give another mandate to the BJP and reiterated the party’s stand on tackling illegal infiltration.
“Every infiltrator will be sent out of India,” Shah said, accusing the Indian National Congress of providing shelter to infiltrators during its rule.
“The Congress gave shelter to infiltrators, but the BJP government is determined to identify each one of them and drive them out of the country,” he said.
Shah also referred to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls conducted by the Election Commission of India in certain states and criticised the Congress for opposing the exercise.
“The Congress legalised, formalised and normalised infiltration, but the BJP will remove each one of them from the electoral rolls. Rahul Babu can rest assured that not only their names will be removed from the electoral rolls, but they will also be driven out,” Shah said, referring to Rahul Gandhi.
The Union minister alleged that during Congress rule Assam had been associated with violence and that many youths had lost their lives during that period.
“The Congress did nothing for the youth, but its leaders were only concerned about the benefits of their families,” he said.
Shah further accused the Congress of promoting corruption and political polarisation, while asserting that the BJP government had focused on development, removing infiltrators and protecting the interests of poor families.
The BJP has been in power in Assam since 2016 and returned with a second term in 2021 under Sarma’s leadership. The party has consistently highlighted development initiatives and action against illegal infiltration as key elements of its governance agenda in the state.
