The Indian cricket selectors have announced the squad for the upcoming five-match T20 series against England, which is set to begin on January 22 in Kolkata. Notably, fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been included in the squad, marking his return to the national team after a considerable break.
Shami, who last played for India in the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad, was sidelined for an extended period due to an ankle injury that required surgery.
After his recovery, Shami made his comeback to domestic cricket, featuring in the Ranji Trophy, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Despite his impressive performances, he missed out on selection for India's recent disastrous tour of Australia due to swelling in his knee.
However, following a positive medical assessment, Shami has now regained full fitness and will be seen in action during the T20 series against England.
Alongside Shami, the squad features Dhruv Jurel as the second wicketkeeper, with the in-form Sanju Samson taking the primary role behind the stumps. Jurel replaces Jitesh Sharma in the squad, and Samson’s consistent performances have earned him the first-choice position.
Rishabh Pant, despite his previous contributions, has been left out of the squad for this series.
There are a few other notable changes to the squad as well. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who made a significant impact during India's Test tour to Australia, has been included in the T20 squad in place of Ramandeep Singh.
Another all-rounder, Shivam Dube, has been dropped from the team, with Reddy being given the opportunity to showcase his skills in the shorter format.
Middle-order batsman Riyan Parag is absent from the squad due to an injury, leaving a gap in the middle order that may require a quick reshuffling during the series.
The squad also includes several key players like Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel, who have been integral to India’s success in the T20 format.
The bowling department sees the inclusion of Shami, along with Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and spinners Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakravarthy, and Washington Sundar.
