Delhi Court Extends Judicial Custody of Sisodia and Kavitha.

A Delhi court has decided to extend the judicial custody of former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and BRS leader K. Kavitha until July 31. This extension follows the conclusion of their previous period of judicial custody.

Both individuals were presented to the court via video conference from Tihar Jail, where they have been detained as part of the investigation into the alleged liquor policy scam.

The liquor policy case has been a focal point of legal and political debate, involving prominent figures such as Sisodia and Kavitha. Sisodia, a senior member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been at the centre of allegations concerning irregularities and corruption related to Delhi’s liquor policy. Kavitha, a key leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), is similarly implicated in the same case, which has led to substantial legal proceedings.

On the previous day, Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court extended the judicial custody of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal until August 8. Kejriwal, like Sisodia, faces charges linked to the liquor policy case, and his extended custody reflects the serious nature of the accusations.

The Supreme Court recently took up Sisodia’s bail pleas, issuing a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The court has asked these agencies to submit their replies by July 29. Sisodia’s defence argues that, despite being held for 16 months, the trial has not made significant progress since October 2023.

This claim comes after the Supreme Court had previously denied Sisodia bail in October, with a conditional allowance that he might reapply if the trial’s pace remained sluggish.

The legal battles surrounding the liquor policy scam have been complex, involving multiple high-profile individuals and intricate legal arguments. The extension of custody for Sisodia and Kavitha indicates the ongoing nature of these proceedings and the seriousness with which the judicial system is treating the allegations.

In the broader context, the case has significant political implications, with the involvement of major political figures from different parties. The scrutiny from the Supreme Court and the ongoing legal manoeuvres highlight the complexity and gravity of the charges.

The extensions of judicial custody for Sisodia, Kavitha, and Kejriwal reflect the continued legal challenges in this high-profile case. As the investigation and trial progress, the public and political spheres remain keenly focused on the outcomes and implications of these legal proceedings.
