Canines possess unique qualities that are beyond human capabilities. When these attributes are channelled in the right direction, they can be immensely beneficial. Over the past few months, the Gujarat Police have actively utilised sniffer dogs to solve complex crimes.
In the last six months, the Gujarat Police have successfully resolved eight major crime cases with the assistance of sniffer dogs. These cases have included some of the most dangerous crimes, such as murder, rape, drug trafficking, and robberies.
Gujarat’s Director General of Police, Vikas Sahay, has commended the sniffer dogs, their handlers, and the teams for their exceptional performance in solving these cases.
Two significant narcotics cases were solved with the help of sniffer dogs. The first case was registered on 21st October 2024. A major breakthrough occurred on the Gandhidham Express train, where the sniffer dog ‘Gulab’ detected a steel box carried by a passenger.
Inside the box, the police found pickles and Bengali sweets such as ‘Rasgulla’. However, hidden between these items, the dog found a packet wrapped in cello tape containing drugs.
In another case, on 14th October, police were on a routine patrol when they took a trained dog, ‘Capto’, along with them. Upon entering a house, the dog led them to a bathroom on the first floor. A search of the bathroom revealed 12 kg of illegal drugs.
In a murder case in Bhavnagar, the dog ‘Bina’ played a crucial role in uncovering the truth. After smelling items around the victim's body and blood stains, ‘Bina’ led the police to a national highway. Following the dog's lead, the police eventually located the three criminals responsible for the murder.
The ‘Peni’ dog assisted the police in solving a robbery case in the rural outskirts of Ahmedabad. The robbery, which involved the theft of Rs. 1.07 crore, was resolved when the dog led the police to a school bag and a water bag, ultimately leading them to the thieves.
In a rape case in Surat district, the ‘Power’ dog detected the footwear of the criminal, which led the police to the motorbike used by the perpetrator.
Another successful case involved a criminal who had cut a windmill with a gas cutter, causing damage worth Rs. 1.1 lakh. The police dog ‘Rambo’ played an essential role in leading the officers to the criminal responsible for the damage.
Two more major crimes were resolved with the assistance of dogs ‘Walter’ and ‘Gigli’ in the Gujarat districts of Patan and Vadodara, respectively.
