Police investigating the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case made a significant breakthrough when Sonam, the newly married woman from Indore who allegedly conspired with three contract killers to murder her husband, turned on mobile data to check her WhatsApp messages, inadvertently revealing her location.
According to officials, the couple had four mobile phones. After the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi by the hired assassins, Sonam broke his phone and disposed of the damaged device. The remaining three phones, which belong to Sonam, have not yet been recovered. Authorities are actively searching for them.
The key lead came when Sonam returned to Indore and activated her SIM card on one of her missing devices to access WhatsApp. This action allowed the police to trace her location, ultimately leading to her arrest. Since being taken into custody, Sonam has not disclosed the whereabouts of her phones, and police continue to interrogate her. The search for the devices spans across several districts in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Meghalaya Police on Tuesday recreated the crime scene near Wei Sawdong falls with Sonam and the other accused present. The police revealed that Raja Raghuvanshi was assaulted by all three of the hired killers. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) retraced the group’s movements, starting from Mawlakhiat to the parking area at Wei Sawdong, where the crime occurred.
“We went to the viewpoint where the murder happened and confirmed the positions of each person involved and how the attack unfolded. They used two machetes during the assault—we have one and are still searching for the second,” said Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills.
Syiem added that Sonam had already confessed to her role in the crime. During the recreation, she revealed where she had stood and what she had done at each stage of the murder. Police confirmed that the attack was premeditated. After Raja was killed, all three accomplices helped dispose of his body, with Sonam standing by throughout. She later destroyed his phone to eliminate evidence.
Investigators noted that neither Sonam nor the three accused had previously visited Meghalaya, underscoring the preplanned nature of the trip and murder. Meanwhile, a team from Meghalaya Police has been stationed in Indore to continue the investigation and question additional individuals potentially linked to the case. “They will remain in Indore for now and carry out further inquiries,” SP Syiem said.
