The veteran Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is reported to be in a stable condition at Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where she is undergoing tests for suspected stomach and urinary tract infections. Sonia Gandhi was admitted to the facility at approximately 10:20 pm on Tuesday, with hospital chairman Dr Ajay Swaroop confirming this morning that a team of specialists is closely monitoring her progress and has already commenced a course of antibiotics.

While the hospital’s primary focus is currently on the suspected infections, initial reports suggested she had also been struggling with respiratory discomfort. Dr Swaroop noted that a mild exacerbation of her bronchial asthma had occurred, likely triggered by the persistent dip in temperatures and the high levels of pollution currently hanging over the capital. Sources close to the family have been quick to downplay any major alarm, describing the admission as a purely precautionary measure to manage her condition in light of the changing weather.

The health scare has already had an impact on the Congress party's political schedule. Her son, Rahul Gandhi, cancelled his planned visit to Kerala today, where he was due to launch the party’s assembly election campaign with a high-profile rally in Kozhikode. In his absence, Party President Mallikarjun Kharge has flown to the poll-bound state to lead the proceedings.

This is not the first time the former Congress President has faced health challenges during the summer months; she was hospitalised twice last June — once in Shimla and once in Delhi — for similar gastrointestinal issues. For now, doctors remain optimistic, suggesting that with the right medical management, she should be fit for discharge once the current round of observations is complete.
