UP government faces backlash from Samajwadi Party on 'love jihad' law amendments.

In recent developments, Samajwadi Party leader Fakhrul Hasan Chand has voiced strong opposition to the Uttar Pradesh government's recent amendments to the existing laws on 'Love Jihad.' Chand accused the BJP-led administration under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of engaging in negative politics rather than addressing pressing issues such as unemployment and corruption.

In a self-recorded video, Chand emphasised that the state already has laws in place to address situations where individuals deceive others into relationships with ulterior motives. He argued that the BJP's push for the new ordinance is merely a tactic to divert public attention from more significant problems. According to Chand, these diversionary issues do not benefit the people of Uttar Pradesh.

On Monday, the Yogi Adityanath government introduced the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion (Amendment) Bill in the Assembly. This bill includes provisions for life imprisonment for those found guilty of 'Love Jihad.' The proposed amendments also aim to double the punishments for certain crimes under this law.

The introduction of this bill has sparked considerable debate and criticism, especially from opposition parties. Critics argue that such laws are unnecessary and serve to polarise communities rather than foster harmony. Chand's remarks reflect a broader sentiment among opposition leaders that the government's focus should shift towards addressing more urgent issues affecting the state's population.

Adding to the day's events, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath introduced four new ministers to the Assembly. OP Rajbhar, Anil Kumar, Dara Singh Chauhan, and Sunil Sharma were welcomed as new members of the Cabinet. In his address, Adityanath highlighted their roles and contributions to the Assembly, marking the commencement of their tenure.

Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana also welcomed Samajwadi Party leader Mata Prasad Pandey, who has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the House. Pandey expressed his gratitude for the appointment and promptly highlighted the critical issues currently facing the state, including floods, law and order problems, and corruption.

Speaker Mahana assured that these matters would be addressed in the Assembly. He acknowledged Pandey's right to bring notices on these issues and confirmed the government's readiness to discuss and respond to them. This assurance reflects the government's willingness to engage in dialogue and address the concerns raised by the opposition.

The debate around the 'Love Jihad' law amendments is likely to continue, with significant implications for the political landscape in Uttar Pradesh. The opposition's call for attention to more substantive issues such as unemployment, corruption, and natural disasters underscores the need for a balanced approach to governance that prioritises the welfare of all citizens.
