Security has been significantly tightened across the region in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Srinagar on June 20 to participate in  International Yoga Day on June 21, held this time by the famed Dal Lake, police officials have said.

A senior official at Police Headquarters told reporters that security had been reinforced in Srinagar and adjacent areas for the visit.

“A high-level meeting regarding PM Modi’s security arrangements was held in Srinagar, attended by heads of various agencies.

Some SOPs have been formulated for arrangements and they will be accordingly implemented until June 20,” he said.

Additional police and paramilitary personnel have been stationed at critical locations, spanning from Airport Road to the Sher-I-Kashmir International Centre (SKICC).

Security measures include CCTV surveillance, checkpoints, and frisking points strategically placed to mitigate security risks.

The Special Operations Group (SOG) will oversee vigilance for suspicious activities, while J&K Police Commandos and CRPF forces have been deployed around SKICC to pre-empt potential incidents.

In Srinagar, police and paramilitary forces have set up barricades in many places and other major towns to search vehicles.

Tight security has been deployed around SKICC along the Dal Lake banks.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Srinagar on June 20 and join the Yoga Day celebrations on June 21.

He will arrive in Kashmir on June 20 and stay overnight, participating in the yoga session the following morning.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration, under Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha's leadership, is on high alert in anticipation of the PM’s visit.

The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has been tasked with organising the Yoga Day event.

According to a JKSC official, yoga teams and instructors are gearing up for the event.

"We are actively coordinating with various sports wings to gather 3,000 athletes for the mega event," he stated, adding that special training sessions are being conducted in Srinagar to prepare the participants.
