He argued that redrawing constituencies solely on the basis of the next Census would significantly reduce Tamil Nadu’s representation in Parliament, along with that of other southern states.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M. K. Stalin on Tuesday issued a strong “final warning” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cautioning that any delimitation exercise that adversely impacts the state’s political representation would trigger massive resistance from the people of the state.

In a video message posted on the social media platform X, Stalin directly addressed the Prime Minister, stating, “Hon’ble Prime Minister, this is Tamil Nadu’s final warning.” The nearly five-minute video, delivered in Tamil with English subtitles and accompanied by the hashtag #TNwillFightTNwillWin, has garnered significant attention online.

Stalin’s remarks centred on the Union government’s proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies, which is expected to be taken up through a Constitutional amendment in the upcoming parliamentary session. He argued that redrawing constituencies solely on the basis of the next Census would significantly reduce Tamil Nadu’s representation in Parliament, along with that of other southern states.

The Chief Minister contended that such an exercise would effectively penalise states like Tamil Nadu that have successfully implemented population control and family planning measures over several decades. According to him, linking representation strictly to population would reward states with higher population growth while disadvantaging those that have stabilised their numbers.

Stalin also accused the Centre of adopting a unilateral approach, alleging that no consultations had been held with the state governments, opposition parties, or the DMK despite repeated requests for dialogue. He described the proposed move as a “direct assault” on the rights of states and warned that it could undermine India’s federal structure by weakening the voice of southern India in national decision-making.

Issuing a call for agitation, Stalin said that if the delimitation process proceeds in a manner detrimental to Tamil Nadu, “every family” in the state would take to the streets. He asserted that the DMK would launch a strong protest movement reminiscent of its historic struggles in the 1950s and 1960s, adding, “Tamil Nadu will fight, and Tamil Nadu will win.”

The statement comes amid growing unease among southern states over the long-pending delimitation exercise, which has not been carried out since the early 2000s, with the freeze on seat allocation based on the 1971 Census extended multiple times. Leaders in the region have expressed concerns that a fresh delimitation without safeguards could shift political power towards more populous northern states.

Stalin has repeatedly raised the issue in recent weeks, calling for greater transparency and warning against any move taken without the consent of the southern states. In earlier remarks, he had cautioned the Centre against “turning a calm South into a storm” and questioned the lack of clarity surrounding the process.

The latest video message is seen as an attempt to consolidate political opinion within Tamil Nadu ahead of key developments, while also signalling strong opposition to the Centre’s proposed course of action.
