India's proposed air defence system, Sudarshan Chakra, will be the "mother of all air defence systems combined together," said the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC) Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit on Tuesday. Addressing a conference on Counter UAVs & Air Defence Systems: Future of Modern Warfare', Air Marshal Dixit further noted that Sudarshan Chakra will include counter-drone, counter-UAV and counter-hypersonic systems among others, and would be a ‘game changer in Indian defence’.
In his address at a conference, he also said that the adversary has learnt from Operation Sindoor and so "we will have to be two steps ahead" of them in military thinking and planning. Citing the reference of the recent Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war, Air Marshal highlighted the significance of drone technology, as in how they are cheaper but played a major role in destroying/causing huge damage to the military assets of the other sides.
Talking about the Operation Sindoor, Air Marshal Dixit said certain drones which "we caught were sophisticated, using... AI, visual means, and even if we jammed their GPS, they were able to reach somewhere close, and they are also working and becoming better, so we have to go one step ahead.”
Drones created an "innovation adaptation cycle" and the Indian industry, think-tanks, academia's job should be to think "two steps ahead" to stay ahead of the adversary, as it is "like a game of chess", he said, adding that just like 'Make in India', we will have to start 'Think in India' and ideate.
"We are still in the ideation phase, but counter-drones, counter-UAV... counter-hypersonic, all these kinds of things, and some other things else also, which cannot be spoken about, all those combined together are Mission Sudarshan Chakra, with counter drone in the lowest layer of the system," he said.
"It is in the ideation phase, but I can tell you that it will be all-encompassing,” he added.
Senior military officers, experts, and representatives of various defence firms were also present at the conference.
