Sunita Kejriwal Slams "Emergency-like" Tactics in Arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal by CBI.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sparked sharp reactions, with his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, equating the events to a "dictatorship" reminiscent of the Emergency era.

Kejriwal was taken into custody from a courtroom following a decision by the Delhi Court's Vacation Judge, who permitted the CBI to interrogate him and formalise his arrest in connection with the Excise policy case.

Sunita Kejriwal voiced her dismay on social media, alleging a concerted effort by authorities to keep her husband detained despite him securing bail earlier on June 20, which was subsequently stayed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). She criticised the sequence of events, labelling them as an abuse of power akin to the Emergency period in Indian history.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders marked the 50th anniversary of the Emergency with protests at the Parliament premises. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condemned the Emergency, describing it as a dark chapter in India's history. The lower house observed a sombre moment of silence to honour those who lost their lives during that tumultuous period.

Birla underscored the significance of upholding democratic values and defending the Constitution, emphasising that the imposition of Emergency in 1975 had stifled democracy and curtailed freedom of expression. He praised the resilience of individuals who resisted the Emergency, safeguarding India's democratic fabric envisioned by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

The developments surrounding Kejriwal's arrest have reignited debates about the balance between executive authority and judicial independence in India. Critics argue that the swift actions against Kejriwal raise concerns about due process and fair trial rights, echoing sentiments expressed during the Emergency era.

The legal proceedings continue to unfold, with Kejriwal's legal team preparing to challenge the High Court's stay on his bail and contest the grounds of his arrest. The case has drawn significant public attention, reflecting broader concerns about political freedoms and the rule of law in contemporary India.

As the situation evolves, stakeholders across the political spectrum are closely monitoring the implications of Kejriwal's arrest on governance and democratic principles.

The coming days are likely to witness further legal manoeuvres and public discourse on the fundamental rights of individuals and the responsibilities of state authorities.
