The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) regarding the issues surrounding the non-release of funds earmarked for the board's operations in managing the distribution of drinking water in the national capital.

In a recent hearing, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud directed the impleadment of the Delhi Jal Board in the matter and issued a notice to the DJB. The court has scheduled the next hearing for Wednesday, April 10.

During the proceedings, the court also directed Delhi's Principal Secretary (Finance) to ensure the payment of any amounts owed. This direction comes in the wake of the Delhi Government's plea seeking the release of funds allocated for the DJB.

Previously, in a hearing, the court was apprised by the Delhi Government's counsel of challenges they faced, including alleged non-compliance by civil servants with government directives. It was highlighted that a significant sum, amounting to Rs 1,927 crore, remains pending for release to the DJB.

The core issue at hand revolves around the non-release of funds to the Delhi Jal Board, a matter that has been ongoing and has garnered significant attention.

In November 2023, Delhi Minister Atishi wrote to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, urging action against the Finance Secretary for allegedly withholding funds meant for the DJB.

Atishi emphasised that the delay in releasing these funds could potentially lead to a public health crisis in the near future, underscoring the critical importance of resolving the issue promptly.

The Supreme Court's intervention in this matter underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgency to address the funding challenges faced by the Delhi Jal Board.

With access to safe and clean drinking water being a fundamental necessity for the residents of the national capital, ensuring the timely release of funds is crucial to uphold public welfare and prevent any potential health hazards.

The upcoming hearing on April 10 will provide an opportunity for further deliberation and hopefully, a resolution to the ongoing funding issues plaguing the DJB.
