Surjewala alleges exam irregularities, seeks judicial probe

Surjewala pointed out that the written examination for the Assistant Professor (Hindi) post, which was held earlier this month, was cancelled by HPSC after issues such as broken seals on question papers were reported.

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala on Sunday alleged serious irregularities in the recently conducted Assistant Professors recruitment examination by the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC). He demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter and called for the cancellation and re-conduct of the entire examination process.

Speaking at a press conference in Delhi, Surjewala stated, “The HPSC should be dismissed. There should be a judicial inquiry of the entire process related to question papers of the Assistant Professor examination. The exams must be held again, and action must be taken against the guilty officials.” As of now, there has been no response from the Haryana government or the HPSC regarding the allegations.

Surjewala pointed out that the written examination for the Assistant Professor (Hindi) post, which was held earlier this month, was cancelled by HPSC after issues such as broken seals on question papers were reported. “Irregularities, mistakes, and faulty question papers have been exposed every day in the recently held HPSC Assistant Professor recruitment process,” he said.

He recalled a previous incident from four years ago involving a recruitment scam related to dental surgeons, in which a deputy secretary of HPSC had been arrested. He linked that case to the present situation, claiming a pattern of misconduct within the commission. Highlighting the backlog in recruitment, Surjewala noted that for the past seven years, no appointments have been made for Assistant Professor (College Cadre) posts in Haryana. In August 2024, HPSC advertised 2,424 posts across 26 subjects, drawing around 1.5 lakh applicants. However, according to him, the recruitment process that began in May-June 2025 has been marred by controversy from the start.

Citing specific examples, Surjewala said, “On June 1, the Assistant Professor (Hindi) paper was held. The seal of six question paper packets was found broken, and 27 questions in the paper were found to be incorrect.” He further added that the cancellation of the paper on June 3 by HPSC itself was proof of the irregularities. “If the seal was not broken and the questions were not wrong, then why was the paper cancelled?” he asked.

He also mentioned that on May 29, during the Assistant Professor (Political Science) exam held in Panchkula, many students reported broken seals on their question papers and filed complaints. Surjewala claimed the most glaring example of mismanagement occurred during the Assistant Professor (Geography) exam held on June 8, 2025. “In this paper, 26 questions were directly copied from a previous Geography exam conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), and six more were partially repeated from the same BPSC paper—making a total of 32 reused questions,” he said.

He questioned whether this was mere coincidence or a deliberate attempt to help selected candidates. “If someone has to be passed illegally, he just needs to be told to study the BPSC paper,” Surjewala claimed, adding that similar issues were found in the History paper as well.

To address the situation, he demanded the formation of an expert group to assess accountability, transparency, and fairness in HPSC’s examination processes. “The future of Haryana’s youth is being pushed into darkness due to such flawed recruitment procedures,” Surjewala asserted.
