STF arrested a suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed operative in Bardhaman and is probing alleged links to a suspected plot after recovering sensitive documents.

In a major counter-terror operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police has arrested a suspected operative of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) from East Bardhaman district, foiling what investigators suspect was a planned attack targeting the Chief Minister. The accused, identified as Hamid Mondal, was apprehended early Friday morning from a flat in the upscale Renaissance Complex. He has claimed to be a resident of Kashmir.

According to STF sources, investigators recovered sensitive documents and data from the suspect, including details related to VIP movement, route maps, and security schedules of the Chief Minister. The seizure has raised serious concerns within security agencies, with officials suspecting that a major attack was being planned using the state as an operational base.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Mondal is a close associate of Sajjad Bhat, a key conspirator in the 2019 Pulwama attack, and is allegedly linked to his network. Before shifting to Bardhaman, the accused is believed to have stayed in a rented apartment in Newtown, Kolkata—an area located close to the Chief Minister’s residence—further intensifying security concerns.

STF officials said initial findings suggest that the accused conducted multiple reconnaissance visits along routes frequently used by the Chief Minister. He was allegedly in possession of confidential information related to the Chief Minister’s movement, including vehicle timings, registration numbers, and details about drivers.

“Digital forensics and tower location analysis have revealed that Mondal maintained regular encrypted communication with JeM handlers based in Kashmir. Authorities are now probing possible links to cross-border networks in Pakistan and examining whether forged identity documents were used to facilitate his movement and stay,” said an STF officer.

The arrest was carried out during a joint operation by the Bardhaman Police and the STF, effectively disrupting what officials describe as a potentially serious threat. Seized electronic devices, mobile phones, and documents have been sent for detailed forensic examination to uncover the full extent of the alleged conspiracy.

Security has since been tightened across sensitive locations, while intelligence agencies continue to investigate the broader network and possible accomplices involved in the plot.
