Arunachal Pradesh is gearing up for the much-anticipated second edition of the Tawang Marathon, scheduled for October 24, 2024.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the event, inviting runners from across the nation to experience the challenge of racing at 10,000 feet above sea level.
One of India’s toughest mountain marathons, it promises participants a unique opportunity to run amidst the majestic Himalayan landscape, with the event being held under the theme of ‘Run for Global Peace.’
The Tawang Marathon, co-organised by the Indian Army and the government of Arunachal Pradesh, is fast gaining recognition for its picturesque route and physical demands.
It serves not only as a testament to endurance but also as a celebration of Arunachal Pradesh’s natural beauty, from its pristine environment to the mystical charm of its towering mountains.
Chief Minister Khandu, the first to register for the marathon via the official website, www.tawangmarathon.com, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The Tawang Marathon is more than just a race; it symbolises our nation’s spirit of freedom and unity. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating our rich cultural diversity and democratic principles.”
The state government has announced a substantial prize pool of Rs 60 lakh for the event, heightening the stakes for competitive runners.
The marathon features different categories, catering to various age groups:
- Full Marathon (42.195 KM): 18 years and older (Born before October 23, 2006)
- Half Marathon (21.0975 KM): 16 years and older (Born before October 23, 2008)
- 10 KM Race: 14 years and older (Born before October 23, 2010)
- 5 KM Race: 12 years and older (Born before October 23, 2012)
In the lead-up to the main event, a promotional run featuring the marathon mascot, TABOS, will be held in Itanagar on October 13, 2024.
The marathon has already generated significant buzz with promo runs held in Delhi, Shillong, and Guwahati. Information stalls in Hyderabad and Satara have been set up, and a YouTube channel is expected to launch soon for real-time updates.
“The Tawang Marathon is a true celebration, and our armed forces runners will join in large numbers, offering healthy competition,” noted an Indian Army PRO in an official statement.
