A teenage girl was brutally murdered in broad daylight at a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh, as onlookers – including medical staff – failed to intervene, prompting widespread public outrage and raising serious concerns over security and safety in public institutions.
Sandhya Chaudhary, 19, a Class 12 student, was attacked and killed inside the emergency wing of Narsinghpur District Hospital on Thursday afternoon.
The accused, identified as Abhishek Koshti, is seen in disturbing mobile footage slapping her, forcing her to the floor, pinning her down, and slitting her throat. The video shows doctors, nurses, and patients nearby, none of whom attempted to stop the assailant.
The murder, which lasted nearly 10 minutes, was carried out just metres away from medical professionals and two posted security guards.
Footage, reportedly recorded by a doctor, captures the shocking passivity of those present. Some staff and bystanders even walked past Sandhya as she lay bleeding on the hospital floor.
After attacking the teenager, the suspect allegedly tried to kill himself by slashing his own throat. Failing that, he fled the scene on a motorbike parked outside the hospital.
Sandhya had reportedly told her family she was visiting a friend’s sister-in-law in the maternity ward when she left home at around 2 p.m. Abhishek had allegedly been seen loitering in the hospital premises since noon, likely waiting for her.
They both spoke briefly outside Room 22 before the attack escalated.
According to sources in the hospital, there were at the very least 11 patients admitted to the trauma ward at the time.
Following the incident, eight patients left the facility the same day, and the remaining three were discharged by the following morning due to fear.
Her family was informed of her death around 3:30 p.m. and rushed to the hospital, where they found her body still lying at the scene nearly an hour later.
Grief quickly turned into public fury as family members and locals staged a protest outside the hospital, blocking the road until late in the night. Authorities managed to calm the situation temporarily by 10:30 p.m., but tensions resurfaced until early Friday morning when officials assured the crowd of stringent action against those responsible for the security lapse.
