Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has resigned from her post on Monday amid speculation that she might contest the Lok Sabha elections from her home state of Tamil Nadu.
According to official sources, Soundararajan sent in her resignation letter to the President Doupadi Murmu this morning.
The sources said that she is likely to figure in the BJP's third list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, which is expected soon.
Soundararajan was appointed as the Governor of Telangana in September 2019, less than four months after she lost in the Lok Sabha election from the Thoothukkudi constituency in Tamil Nadu. She had earlier served as the president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit.
Her stint at Raj Bhavan was marred by controversies as she had a constant tiff with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government headed by K Chandrashekar Rao. While Soundararajan had accused the ruling party of disrespecting her multiple times, the BRS was unhappy with her for not clearing key government bills.
The tiff between the two reached a stage wherein the government had to file a motion in the high court to make the governor give her assent to the budget last year. Similarly, a row had broken out when the Governor was not allowed to address the Republic Day Parade. She alleged that the state government was humiliating her office through these repeated violations of protocol.
The Governor made a sensational claim in 2022 that her phones were being tapped at the instance of BRS leaders. From refusing to follow protocol rules on the Republic Day and budget session to not providing her a helicopter to visit certain temples, the BRS government had humiliated her several times, she alleged.
