Security personnel move towards the attack site after terrorists attacked a group of tourists at Pahalgam, in Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag district.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has promised a strong and quick response against those who planned and carried out the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people on Tuesday. Security forces have launched large-scale search operations across the area.

Pahalgam, which is usually full of tourists, now looks empty and tense, with extra patrols and tight security. Videos from the area show deserted streets as both locals and tourists are in shock and fear. The entire nation is mourning the loss of lives in the dastardly attack, and people are demanding strict action against terrorism. The victims came from different parts of India – from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in the south to Arunachal Pradesh in the east and Uttar Pradesh in the north.

The security forces are using helicopters, modern surveillance equipment, and a large number of troops to find the terrorists.

Heart-wrenching scenes were witnessed today when the bodies of the victims were being transported back to their home states in coffins from Srinagar airport.

On Wednesday, a day after the attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site in Baisaran meadow to review on the security situation. He surveyed the area from a helicopter before landing at the location, where tragedy and terror loom large.

The Home Minister walked through the area under heavy security and was briefed by senior officials about the situation and the action being taken. Before visiting Pahalgam, he paid tributes to the victims in a heartfelt ceremony and met their families at the Police Control Room in Srinagar. The meetings with survivors and families were emotional.

Later, on social media platform X, Amit Shah said India will not bow to terrorism. “With a heavy heart, paid last respects to the deceased of the Pahalgam terror attack. Bharat will not bend to terror. The culprits of this dastardly terror attack will not be spared,” he posted.

Meanwhile, a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reached the site to help with the investigation. This is believed to be the deadliest attack on civilians in the region in almost 20 years. The NIA team, led by a Deputy Inspector General, visited Baisaran a day after the terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists.

Sources say the NIA will work closely with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, gather forensic evidence, and help find out who was behind the attack.

After the incident, thousands of tourists are leaving Kashmir. Authorities are doing everything they can to help people return home safely. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said it was heartbreaking to see so many tourists leaving.

“It’s heartbreaking to see the exodus of our guests from the Valley after yesterday’s tragic terror attack in Pahalgam but at the same time we totally understand why people would want to leave,” he wrote on X. He also mentioned that extra flights are being arranged and traffic has been reopened on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.

People in the tourism business said nearly 80 per cent of bookings have been cancelled. Aijaz Ali, a travel agent from Srinagar, said tourists are leaving mainly due to fear.
