Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday criticised the opposition, accusing them of attempting to control Parliament through "hooliganism" for their political gain.
Addressing mediapersons ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, Modi remarked that those "rejected by the people 80-90 times" were behind the disruptions and chaos in the House.
He added that despite their efforts, these individuals failed in their attempts, and the people of India had ultimately punished them at the right moment.
Modi's comments came shortly after the BJP-led coalition's landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, where the ruling Mahayuti secured 235 seats, leaving the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi with only 49 seats.
The Prime Minister also referred to the BJP’s unexpected third consecutive win in Haryana, where the Congress, once considered a pre-poll favourite, was decisively defeated.
"Parliament should be a forum for healthy debate. Unfortunately, some individuals seek to control it for their own political advantage, creating disruptions," Modi said.
"While their tactics ultimately fail, the people are watching and they deliver justice at the right time," he added.
Modi also urged opposition leaders to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament. “Some opposition leaders agree with the need for a functional Parliament.
However, those continuously rejected by the public ignore these sentiments, disrespecting their colleagues and democracy itself,” he added.
The Winter Session of Parliament commenced on Monday and is set to run until December 20.
