Three Bangladeshi escapees held after manhunt

Three Bangladeshi nationals who had escaped from the Hazaribagh detention centre in Jharkhand were arrested by different teams of Jharkhand Police on Tuesday.

Jharkhand jail escapees arrested in Bengal.


Three Bangladeshi nationals who had escaped from the Hazaribagh detention centre in Jharkhand were arrested by different teams of Jharkhand Police on Tuesday.

 

The escapees, identified as Reena Khan alias Reena Devi, Nifa Akhtar alias Khushi, and Md Nazmul Haldar, had fled the detention centre of JP Central Jail, Hazaribagh on the intervening night of 7 and 8 June by removing barbed wire from a camp wall.

 

Focusing on technical input and intelligence, teams were dispatched to various locations, including Tisri in Giridih and Mihijam in Jamtara district. A central monitoring team, established in the Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police's office, provided continuous support and instructions to the field units.

 

This central team also facilitated the deployment of two additional teams to West Bengal – one to Bangaon and another to Kolkata.

 

The team in Bangaon, working closely with the West Bengal Police, arrested Nifa Akhtar alias Khushi and Nazmul Haldar. Meanwhile, the team sent to Kolkata, acting on crucial intelligence, pursued Reena Khan alias Reena Devi.

 

The team intercepted and arrested Reena Khan at Dhanbad Railway Station with the assistance of GRP Dhanbad and Kolkata Police.

 

The apprehended Bangladeshi nationals had previously been transferred to the Hazaribagh detention centre from different jails. Reena Khan alias Reena Devi was transferred from Jamtara Jail on 4 February 2022.

 

She faces charges in connection with Mihijam Police Station case number C-15/2018 (sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 120B IPC and section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946) and Jamtara Police Station case number 19/2018 (dated 3 February 2018, sections 363, 120B IPC).

 

Nifa Akhtar alias Khushi was transferred on 28 September 2024 and is charged in Biryatu Police Station case number 188/2024 (sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 34 IPC, section 12 of the Passport Act 1967, and section 14A of the Foreigners Act).

 

Md Nazmul Haldar, transferred on 1 March 2025, is implicated in Rajmahal Police Station case number 44/23 (section 14A(b) of the Foreigners Act). Cases have been registered against all three arrested individuals under various relevant sections.
