'Tied pilots’ hands': Rahul Gandhi slams Centre over IAF jet

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government instructed the DGMO to avoid any escalation during Operation Sindoor.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi speaks during a debate in the House on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, at the Monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi, Tuesday.

A heated debate unfolded in Parliament on Tuesday during the ongoing discussion on Operation Sindoor, with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge launching blistering attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders demanded clarity over US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, questioned the Modi government's political will and strategic approach during Operation Sindoor. In a strongly worded address, he asserted, “If you want to deploy the Indian Armed Forces effectively, you need 100 per cent political will and complete freedom of operation.”

Gandhi drew a historical comparison with the 1971 Indo-Pak war, pointing to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s support for military leadership. “When the Seventh Fleet was approaching India, Indira Gandhi told General Manekshaw to take six months, a year — whatever he needed. That’s called freedom of action. That’s what real political resolve looks like,” he said.

Turning his focus to Donald Trump's controversial statements, Rahul Gandhi dared Prime Minister Modi to break his silence. “If he has the courage, he will say here that Donald Trump is a liar. If he has the courage, bol dega, bol denge sorry,” he remarked with sarcasm, challenging the Prime Minister to refute Trump’s repeated claims directly in Parliament. “Why is the Prime Minister silent? If Trump is lying, say it. Say it in Parliament.”

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks were reinforced by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who addressed the Rajya Sabha and raised concerns over India’s continued silence on the matter. Kharge questioned the government’s lack of response despite Trump repeatedly stating he mediated peace between India and Pakistan.

“Trump has publicly claimed 29 times that he brokered the ceasefire between the two countries,” Kharge said. “Even now, while I’m speaking, he may be saying it for the 30th time. Why is the government refusing to respond? Why are they not ready to accept or deny it?” The Congress leadership’s twin attack in both Houses of Parliament intensified pressure on the Modi government to clarify its position on Trump’s assertions and defend its strategic decisions taken during and after Operation Sindoor.
