The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to Humayun Kabir, the MLA from Debra in Paschim Medinipur and a former IPS officer, following his controversial visit to the family of a minor girl who died in a bomb blast in Kaliganj, Nadia.
Kabir visited the residence of 13-year-old Tamanna Khatun, who was killed in an explosion after bombs were allegedly hurled during a victory procession of the ruling TMC, following the party’s win in the Kaliganj by-election. The victim’s family, known to be CPM supporters, claimed the attack was politically motivated.
During his visit on Wednesday, Kabir attempted to offer financial assistance to Tamanna’s grieving mother, Sabina Bibi, by handing over an envelope allegedly containing money. However, Sabina refused the offer, stating that they did not need financial aid but demanded justice for her daughter's death.
“We have land and a house. We don’t need money. We want justice,” she said. She also expressed anger that the newly elected Trinamool MLA from Kaliganj had not yet visited the family.
Kabir stated that he had gone to the house in his capacity through a non-governmental organisation, not as a representative of the party. “The party was not aware of my visit. I went on behalf of my NGO,” he said.
However, the TMC leadership did not take the matter lightly. State TMC vice-president Jayaprakash Majumdar confirmed that Kabir had been issued a show-cause notice for acting independently without informing the party.
“The way he went to the victim’s house and tried to hand over money without consulting the party is not supported by the Trinamool Congress. That is why he has been reprimanded,” Majumdar said.
Kabir has been asked to respond within 72 hours.
TMC Parliamentary Party Minister Shobhandeb Chatterjee clarified that the action was taken by the party’s main organisation and not its legislative wing.
Meanwhile, public anger continues to simmer in Kaliganj.
Sabina Bibi has expressed dissatisfaction with the police investigation. “I mentioned 24 names in the complaint, but only five have been arrested. The rest are roaming freely while the police remain inactive,” she alleged.
A senior officer from Krishnagar Police District responded to the accusation, saying, “Many suspects are still at large. We are conducting raids and trying to arrest them.”
