Flash Floods and Landslides Ravage North East.

Heavy rainfall and its devastating impact have left at least 16 people dead across several states in North East India within 24 hours, as landslides, flash floods, and falling trees wreaked havoc in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Tripura.

In Assam’s capital Guwahati, three fatal landslides were reported. In the Bonda area, a recently constructed house collapsed after being hit by a landslide, killing a woman, Poonam Goswami, and two children.

The house was just four months old. Two other fatalities were reported in Datalpara and Maligaon, where Dipjyoti Boro and another man lost their lives in separate incidents.

In Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng district, a vehicle carrying seven people was swept away by a landslide on the Bana–Seppa road late Friday night. While rescue efforts continue, officials fear there may be no survivors as inclement weather hampers operations.

Meghalaya has also suffered severe damage. In Lumkyntung village, 50-year-old Klosliya Kharkongor died when a landslide struck her house. Two others were injured.

Earlier, a man drowned in Wah Krot stream in the Mylliem Block. Multiple districts — including East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, and East Jaintia Hills — have reported blocked roads, damaged schools, and widespread power outages affecting at least 25 villages.

Tripura’s West district recorded a drowning death in the Jiranai area due to sudden flash floods. Rising water levels remain a concern as rains continue unabated.

In Assam, floods were reported in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Golaghat districts, affecting eight revenue circles. Urban flooding has also hit parts of Kamrup Metro and Cachar. The State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed deployment of NDRF and SDRF teams for evacuation and relief efforts.

In Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma chaired an emergency meeting with Deputy Commissioners to review response measures. Preliminary assessments show damage to critical infrastructure, including roads, schools, and commercial establishments.

As residents across the region cope with the loss of life and property, emergency services remain engaged around the clock. With more rainfall forecast, authorities are urging caution and preparedness amid an ongoing humanitarian challenge.
