The 54th Annual Convention of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) has commenced in Goa, marking a significant event in the hospitality industry. The convention, which runs from October 16 to 18, was inaugurated by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Minister for Tourism, in the presence of Goa's Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant.

This three-day gathering at the Taj Cidade de Goa aims to address the future of tourism and hospitality in India, attracting around 800 delegates from across the country.

The theme for this year's convention, “Tourism @2047: Incredible to Inevitable India – Driving Growth and Sustainability in a Mission Mode,” sets a visionary agenda. It focuses on developing strategies to ensure sustainable growth and innovation in the tourism sector, aligning with the national goal of India becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The discussions emphasise the pivotal role tourism can play in driving economic growth and fostering sustainability. Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted the crucial challenges faced by the tourism industry.

He stressed the need for the state government to grant industry status to the tourism sector to effectively tackle these challenges. Shekhawat pointed out the importance of sharing best practices and government policies among states to strengthen the industry.

He noted that initiatives compiled on World Tourism Day had urged states to implement strategies that would enhance the tourism landscape in India. His proactive approach includes a request for a meeting with the Finance Minister to discuss ongoing issues related to GST and infrastructure, even amidst her commitments at the World Bank Summit.

Shekhawat expressed optimism about discussions regarding granting infrastructure status to the tourism industry. He emphasised that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India’s global standing is improving.

He mentioned various initiatives like “Dekho Apna Desh” and “Chalo India” aimed at empowering the Indian diaspora to promote the country's tourism potential. Notably, in celebration of World Tourism Day, the government offered one lakh free visas, and efforts are underway to attract international markets.

The Minister committed to working with state governments to propose large-scale tourism projects that can diversify offerings and promote new tourism destinations, particularly in rural and lesser-known areas.

He expressed gratitude to the Government of Goa and the Chief Minister for hosting the conference, recognizing FHRAI's continuous efforts to advance the tourism sector.

Rohan Khaunte, Goa’s Tourism Minister, welcomed delegates warmly, expressing pride in hosting the convention in Goa after a long interval. He spoke of Goa’s rich tradition of hospitality and emphasised the theme of transformative change in Indian tourism. Khaunte acknowledged the significance of the event in shaping the future of tourism in India.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant reflected on the pivotal role of tourism in India's economic landscape. He pointed out the ambitious goals of establishing a $3 trillion tourism economy and welcoming 100 million foreign visitors annually by 2047.

Sawant stressed the importance of sustainability, technological innovation, and the development of a skilled workforce to achieve these goals. He underscored that Goa stands as a symbol of Indian tourism, combining beauty and cultural heritage.

Pradeep Shetty, President of FHRAI, spoke about the tourism sector's potential to significantly impact India’s economy. He noted that while various reports suggest the sector contributes around 9 percent to India's GDP, estimates indicate the figure could be as high as 12 to 13 percent, given the unorganised nature of much of the industry.

Shetty highlighted the importance of recognizing the tourism sector's capabilities to create jobs across various segments of society, benefiting individuals from diverse backgrounds.

He mentioned projections indicating that the addition of 50,000 to 60,000 new hotel rooms in the next five years could greatly enhance employment opportunities, especially for youth, women, and marginalised communities. The emphasis on inclusivity in the tourism industry is vital for fostering broader economic growth that positively impacts all citizens.

A special moment during the convention was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to the late P.R.S. Oberoi, honouring his significant contributions to the Indian hospitality sector.

Additionally, the Hall of Fame Award was given to notable figures like Lalit Suri, the late Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair, and Dr. Ajit B. Kerkar for their pioneering work in the industry.
