In a devastating incident in Odisha's Jajpur district, a bus carrying approximately 50 passengers veered off a flyover on National Highway-16 near Barabati, resulting in five fatalities and leaving around 38 individuals injured. The bus, en route from Cuttack to West Bengal's Digha, met with the accident, causing widespread shock and sorrow in the region.
According to the Chief District Medical Officer of Jajpur, the injured, including the critically wounded bus driver, have been swiftly transported to medical facilities for treatment. The SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and the Community Health Center in Jajpur are actively providing medical aid to the victims.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the tragedy, suggesting that the driver's erratic behaviour may have contributed to the mishap. Suspicions arose regarding the driver possibly operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol, raising concerns about road safety and the need for stringent enforcement measures.
Responding promptly to the calamity, rescue operations have been initiated by fire services personnel and local volunteers at the accident site, aiming to provide assistance and support to those affected by the incident.
Expressing profound sadness over the loss of lives, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Additionally, he announced financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh each for the families of the deceased, acknowledging the tragic toll exacted by the unfortunate event.
As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident unfold, there is a collective call for enhanced vigilance and adherence to road safety protocols to avert such catastrophic incidents in the future.
