Delhi  Chief Minister Rekha Guptaon Thursday announced a series of measures aimed at conserving fuel and reducing government expenditure, including implementing work-from-home (WFH) for two days a week in government offices, encouraging Metro travel for officials on Mondays, and promoting a voluntary ‘no-vehicle day’ once every week.

Addressing a press conference alongside members of her Cabinet, Gupta said the Delhi government had prepared a comprehensive action plan under the campaign 'Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan' in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and prudent spending.

As part of the initiative, all Delhi government departments will adopt WFH for two days every week. Gupta added that private companies in the national capital would also be encouraged to voluntarily implement similar arrangements.

The chief minister further announced that all ministers, senior officials and she herself would use the Delhi Metro for commuting every Monday. Citizens would also be urged to observe a voluntary ‘no-vehicle day’ each week to reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion.

Among other austerity measures, the Delhi government has decided to suspend all official foreign tours by ministers for one year. Additionally, no major government-sponsored events will be organised over the next three months, Gupta said. She also announced a 20 per cent reduction in petrol and diesel quotas allotted to Delhi government officials.

Earlier in the day, Gupta chaired a meeting with Cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats to discuss strategies for conserving fuel and other resources amid global uncertainty regarding crude oil and gas supplies.

The chief minister has also significantly reduced the size of her official motorcade by nearly 60 per cent, following the prime minister’s call for responsible spending and fuel saving in light of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

According to officials, Gupta’s convoy now consists of only four vehicles, including two electric vehicles (EVs).
