Uddhav Thackeray Invokes 'Shakti Bill' Amid Badlapur Assault Outrage.

The alleged sexual assault of two young girls in Badlapur, Maharashtra, has triggered widespread protests and a call for stringent measures. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has invoked the Shakti Bill, emphasising the need for strict action against those responsible for the crime. The bill, which was set to be passed under Thackeray’s administration, remains unfulfilled following the recent political changes in Maharashtra.

The distressing incident at a local school, where two minor girls were reportedly assaulted, has led to a significant public outcry. Protesters, angered by the event, blocked trains and targeted the school at Badlapur Railway Station. The situation escalated, with some demonstrators throwing stones and the police intervening with tear gas to restore order.

Thackeray criticised the current government for failing to enact the Shakti Bill, which aims to enhance protections for women and children. He pointed out that the bill was nearly passed before his government was replaced. Despite linking the incident to the BJP, Thackeray stressed that the primary focus should be on delivering justice rather than engaging in political rhetoric.

The Maharashtra Education Minister, Deepak Kesarkar, confirmed that one person has been arrested in connection with the assault. He assured that the accused would face severe punishment.

In response to the escalating situation, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has ordered a high-level investigation, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) being established to handle the case.

The protestors, many of whom wore black as a sign of mourning and anger, directed their frustration towards the school. Police managed to detain those responsible for the vandalism and are continuing their investigation. The authorities are working to maintain peace and ensure that the accused are held accountable.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the formation of an SIT led by Inspector General of Police Arti Singh to investigate the incident thoroughly. This move aims to expedite the legal process and ensure that justice is served swiftly.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi voiced her outrage, calling for the immediate approval of the Maharashtra Shakti Criminal Law. She criticised societal attitudes that place undue responsibility on women for their own safety and urged for a stronger legal framework to protect women and children.

The situation remains tense as the community seeks justice for the victims. The authorities are under pressure to address the demands of the protestors and ensure that such incidents do not go unpunished.
