A United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) patrol came under fire near the village of Qalaouiyah, with attackers firing approximately 30 rounds at peacekeepers. According to a statement from UNIFIL, the attack involved two or three unidentified individuals. Thankfully, no injuries or vehicle damage were reported.
The patrol had earlier discovered a cache of ammunition near the road and promptly informed the Lebanese Armed Forces. After notifying local authorities, the peacekeepers continued their route but later paused to clear debris on the road. It was during this pause that the attack occurred.
The peacekeepers managed to safely withdraw from the area, and an investigation has been launched to determine if the attack was connected to the ammunition cache discovery.
UNIFIL strongly condemned the attack, labelling it a violation of international law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which safeguards peacekeeping personnel.
The force emphasised the responsibility of Lebanese authorities to ensure the security of peacekeepers and called for a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute the attackers.
Despite the growing risks, UNIFIL reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining its operations and monitoring violations of Resolution 1701. The incident underscores the challenges faced by peacekeepers operating in a volatile environment.
The incident near Qalaouiyah reflects the escalating dangers faced by peacekeepers in the region as geopolitical tensions rise. UNIFIL’s role in maintaining stability and monitoring adherence to international resolutions remains critical in this precarious situation. The force continues to call for cooperation from all parties to uphold peace and security in the area.
