Boatmen operating on the Saryu river in Ayodhya will be trained to narrate the history of ancient local sites to tourists under a new initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government aimed at enriching the pilgrimage experience.

Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said on Friday that the initiative seeks to transform routine boat rides into immersive cultural tours, while placing equal emphasis on passenger safety.

In a statement, Singh said the decision follows a consistent rise in tourist footfall in Ayodhya and a growing interest in river-based activities. As part of the programme, the Tourism Department is conducting a three-day training session from January 15 to 17 for 55 boatmen and other tourism stakeholders.

The training is being organised in collaboration with the Manyavar Kanshiram Tourism Management Institute, Lucknow, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). It will cover storytelling techniques, digital payment systems, disaster management and emergency first aid.

The minister said the objective is to integrate tourism with cultural heritage and safety. He added that trained boatmen would act as key ambassadors of Ayodhya’s rich historical legacy while ensuring safe boating practices on the river.

Singh further said the department is working to strengthen water tourism safety across Uttar Pradesh, adding that similar training programmes are being conducted in several districts to promote skill development and empower the boatmen community.

Ayodhya is one of India’s most important pilgrimage destinations, revered for its association with Lord Ram. In recent years, the city has seen a significant rise in tourist and pilgrim footfall, especially after developments around the Ram Mandir and related infrastructure upgrades. The Saryu river, which flows through the city, is central to the pilgrimage experience, with boat rides offering views of ghats, temples, and historical sites.

By focusing on Ayodhya, the Uttar Pradesh government is leveraging the city’s religious and cultural importance to enhance tourism, improve visitor engagement, and boost the local economy.
