The famed 'Tirangi Barfi' of Kashi, a tricolored sweet with historical significance from the Quit India Movement, is among the six new products from Uttar Pradesh awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

On Tuesday, the GI Registry granted certification to the Banaras Tirangi Barfi and five other products, bolstering Uttar Pradesh's status as the leading state with 75 GI-tagged products in India. Tamil Nadu follows closely behind with 58 GI products.
The newly certified products from Uttar Pradesh include Banaras Metal Casting Craft, Lakhimpur Kheri Tharu Embroidery, Bareilly Cane and Bamboo Craft, Bareilly Zardozi Craft, and Pilkhuwa Hand Block Print Textile.
Renowned GI expert Padma Shri Rajnikant, General Secretary of the Human Welfare Association, hailed the recognition of two Varanasi products, the Tirangi Barfi and Metal Casting Craft.
"These six GI tags were supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow office," Rajnikant noted. "This achievement solidifies UP’s position as the leading state in GI products."
Rajnikant, instrumental in securing GI tags for 148 producers across 14 states and Union Territories, emphasized the broad reach of these certifications, including regions in the Northeast, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The state's remarkable progress is evident considering that in 2008-09, it had only one GI product, the 'Allahabad Surkha Amrood.'
