The Uttarakhand government, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, is set to present the state budget in the assembly today.
This marks a crucial moment for the administration as it outlines financial allocations and development priorities for the coming year.
Dhami participated in the proceedings of the first assembly session of 2025 of the fifth Legislative Assembly of Uttarakhand on Wednesday.
However, the session was met with opposition from Congress MLAs, who staged a protest against the introduction of smart pre-paid electricity meters in the state.
Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya criticised the government, stating that it was unwilling to extend the assembly session’s duration to avoid discussions on pressing issues.
He highlighted the introduction of smart pre-paid electricity meters as a key concern, arguing that it would place an additional financial burden on the people.
Meanwhile, in a series of financial approvals, the Chief Minister sanctioned Rs 2 crore for modernisation of the state police forces under the financial year 2024-25.
Additionally, he approved Rs 243.91 lakh for surface coating and signage works on various roads in Ward No. 5, Dhoran Khas, in Mussoorie’s assembly constituency in Dehradun district under the state plan.
Dhami also approved a proposal to rename several roads in honour of local heroes. The Chalkudia-Masmoli-Saknoli-Naukholi Motor Road in Garhwal will be named after Shaheed Mandeep Singh Negi, while the Sisaldi-Manjhola Motor Road will be renamed Freedom Fighter Motor Road.
Similarly, the Badiun Kandool Talla-Kandool Malla Uttinda Motor Road will be called Freedom Fighter Tula Singh Rawat Motor Road, recognising the contributions of freedom fighters.
Further financial approvals included Rs 148.48 lakh for reconstruction and surface improvement of a road damaged by excessive water flow from the Gaula River in the Vanbhulpura railway crossing to Gaulapul area in Lalkuan’s assembly constituency.
Additionally, Rs 150.48 lakh was sanctioned for constructing a 15-metre-long RCC bridge over Chinuna Gad to connect Goluchina, Galli, Vasyura, and Govindpur in Almora district’s Someshwar assembly constituency.
Another Rs 121.83 lakh was approved for various road development works.
Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to the people of Uttarakhand on its formation day, marking the commencement of the state’s silver jubilee year on 9 November 2024.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the significance of this milestone, urging citizens to contribute towards the state’s progress over the next 25 years.
He emphasised that Uttarakhand’s journey aligns with India’s broader vision for development, as the country itself is in its 25-year ‘Amrit Kaal’ period.
Modi expressed confidence that this era would witness the fulfilment of developmental aspirations, bringing prosperity to the state and the nation.
The Prime Minister also praised various initiatives undertaken to commemorate Uttarakhand’s 25th anniversary, stating that they would elevate the state’s pride and reinforce its goal of becoming a developed region.
Additionally, he acknowledged the success of the ‘Pravasi Uttarakhand Sammelan’, expressing optimism that members of the diaspora would play an instrumental role in Uttarakhand’s growth.
