Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey, has criticised filmmaker Anurag Kashyap over the latter’s controversial remarks regarding Brahmins, made in a response to an X user.
The remarks came amid the ongoing controversy surrounding Kashyap’s film Phule, a biopic on social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule.
On April 17, Kashyap condemned the protests against Phule, which was set to release last week but has now been delayed to April 25. He questioned why films addressing caste issues face bans in India. In his post, Kashyap had directed harsh words at those protesting the film, but his remark on Brahmins sparked outrage.
Dubey took to X to express his displeasure, saying, “This vile scumbag @anuragkashyap72 thinks he can spit filth on the entire Brahmin community and get away with it? If he doesn’t issue a public apology immediately, I swear I’ll make sure he finds no peace anywhere. Enough of this gutter mouth’s hate, we won’t stay silent!”
In response to the backlash, Kashyap issued an apology, stating that while he stood by his post, he regretted the line that had been taken out of context. The filmmaker added that the situation had escalated to the point where his family, friends, and colleagues were receiving rape and death threats.
Kashyap expressed his regret, saying, “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar (cultural values).”
Kashyap further addressed the controversy surrounding Phule in a series of Instagram posts, clarifying that his first play had been based on the lives of Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule. He also pointed out that had casteism not existed in India, there would have been no need for their fight against it.
The protests over Phule erupted after its trailer was released on April 10. Some members of the Brahmin community objected to how they were portrayed in the film. The film features Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa in the roles of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule.
