BJP secures 215 seats unopposed before Gujarat local body polls.

The local body elections in Gujarat began on Sunday morning, marking a significant political event in the state. Voting started at 7 a.m. and is set to continue until 6 p.m., with counting scheduled for Tuesday.

The elections include Junagadh Municipal Corporation, 68 municipalities, and three taluka panchayats, covering a vast electoral landscape.

This is the first local body election since the Gujarat government introduced a 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in municipalities and panchayats. The decision was implemented in 2023, making these elections particularly important for political parties and the electorate.

Even before polling began, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 215 seats unopposed. This accounts for nearly 10 per cent of the total contested seats in the elections.

Reports suggest that these victories were a result of rival candidates withdrawing their nominations, leaving BJP candidates as the only contenders in these constituencies.

Among the unopposed victories, 196 seats belong to municipalities, while 10 are in district and taluka panchayats. Additionally, BJP has won nine seats in Junagadh Municipal Corporation without any competition. This development gives the party an early advantage ahead of the election results.

The remaining 5,084 candidates are actively contesting in different parts of the state, making the elections highly competitive.

The Election Commission and local authorities have ensured tight security arrangements to maintain a smooth voting process. Police personnel have been deployed at polling stations, and enhanced monitoring systems are in place to prevent any disturbances.

Gujarat has a long electoral history. The first elections in the region were held in 1934 when it was part of the Bombay Presidency. Ahmedabad elected Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, who later became the Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly.

Since Gujarat’s formation in 1960, the state has held regular local body elections to strengthen grassroots governance. The State Election Commission of Gujarat oversees these elections, ensuring transparency and fairness in the process.

In the last local elections held in 2021, over 8,235 seats were contested across Gujarat. At that time, 237 candidates were elected unopposed, highlighting a pattern that continues in the current elections.
