Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan assumed charge as Chairman, Rajya Sabha, after being administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.As Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Radhakrishnan is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining the dignity and decorum of the Upper House, ensuring productive debates and discussions.
“As I assume the charge as Chairman, Rajya Sabha, I am committed to upholding the dignity and integrity of this esteemed institution,” Radhakrishnan said in a statement.
Radhakrishnan offered floral tributes at the statues of eminent leaders, freedom fighters and social reformers at the Prerna Sthal at Parliament House complex where he was welcomed by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Harivansh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Ministers of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal and L Murugan. Rajya Sabha secretary general P C Mody was also present.Floor leaders of various political parties called on Radhakrishnan, congratulating him on his new role. Radhakrishnan also paid floral tributes to the memorials of Mahatma Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, and Chaudhary Charan Singh, paying homage to their contributions to the nation.
He emphasized the importance of constructive debate and discussion in the Upper House, ensuring that every voice is heard and every opinion is valued.The Vice-President also planted a sapling in the Parliament House Complex to mark his first day in office, symbolizing his commitment to a greener future. He formally assumed charge as Chairman, Rajya Sabha, entering the main Parliament House Building through Shardul Dwar.
Later he went to the office of Rajya Sabha chairperson and signed documents assuming charge of the presiding officer of the upper house.The vice president is the ex-officio chair of the Rajya Sabha.Separately, the Union Home Ministry issued a notification announcing that Radhakrishnan has entered the office of the vice president on September 12.Earlier, soon after his swearing in, Radhakrishnan drove down to pay floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
