The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is implementing extensive security measures to ensure the safety of millions of devotees at the upcoming 2025 Mahakumbh.
For the first time, a special water police unit equipped with high-tech jet skis will be introduced to provide safety and rapid response during the bathing rituals, which draw large crowds along the Ganges.
Security preparations at the Mahakumbh will span land, water, and air, with the water police playing a key role in safeguarding pilgrims. Equipped with 25 advanced jet skis, often referred to as “mini ships,” the water police will be able to swiftly reach devotees in need, ensuring that any emergency along the river can be addressed promptly. This addition marks a significant upgrade to the event’s security arrangements, which traditionally relied more on ground forces.
Janardan Prasad Sahni, in charge of the water police at Qila Police Station, explained that these high-tech jet skis are a proactive measure aimed at enhancing the safety of those participating in the Mahakumbh.
These vehicles, expected to arrive by December, are equipped with powerful engines capable of reaching speeds up to 70 km/h. Their design allows them to carry a driver and two passengers, making them ideal for responding to emergencies in the river.
The jet skis work by pulling in water and ejecting it from the rear to create thrust, enabling high-speed travel across the water. With a top speed of 70 km/h, they can respond quickly to incidents along the river, making it easier for the water police to secure distressed devotees or provide assistance in challenging water conditions. This will be especially valuable as the Mahakumbh draws massive crowds to participate in the sacred bathing rituals, a central part of the event.
The 2025 Mahakumbh is set to begin on January 13 with the Paush Purnima Snan and will continue until February 26, ending on the day of Mahashivratri.
During this period, millions of devotees, including saints and pilgrims from across the country, are expected to gather for the holy baths. The government’s investment in high-tech jet skis for the water police reflects a strong commitment to enhancing safety measures, making the event more secure for all attendees.
