West Bengal has reported its first Covid-19-related death of the year with a 43-year-old woman succumbing to the virus at a private hospital in Alipore, Kolkata. This marks the state’s first fatality linked to the recent resurgence of Covid-19 cases, sparking fresh concerns among health officials and the public.
The deceased, a resident of New Alipore, had multiple underlying health conditions. According to a report by the Union Health Ministry, she was suffering from acute coronary syndrome and kidney-related issues. She had also tested positive for Covid, though doctors suggest the virus alone may not have been the sole cause of death.
“This cannot be considered a death purely due to COVID-19,” said Dr Arindam Biswas, adding, “She had serious pre-existing conditions. The current COVID-19 variant has a very low mortality rate, especially as most people are vaccinated. If there are no underlying issues, deaths from this strain are highly unlikely.”
