To provide an extra layer of protection, an optional security feature called a Username Key is also being introduced.

For years, using WhatsApp has almost always meant sharing your phone number, forcing users to give away a deeply personal piece of information whenever they wanted to message someone new. That is finally set to change. In one of the most significant privacy-focused updates to the platform, the Meta-owned messaging service has officially launched the introduction of unique usernames, allowing people to connect without disclosing their mobile numbers. WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations globally, giving users a chance to secure their preferred handles ahead of a wider public release later this year.

The company is positioning the update strictly as a privacy feature rather than a shift towards traditional social media. There are numerous everyday scenarios — such as meeting someone at a networking event, coordinating with a new classmate, or joining a neighbourhood group chat — where sharing a direct phone number might feel a step too far. By allowing users to share a unique handle instead, the platform aims to offer a more secure way to stay in touch. Crucially, there will be no public directory to browse handles, nor will the app suggest usernames to others. To initiate a conversation for the first time, someone will need to know your exact username.

To provide an extra layer of protection, an optional security feature called a Username Key is also being introduced. This allows users to set an additional code that first-time contacts must enter before their message can go through. This key can be altered at any time, handing users greater control over who can reach them. For businesses, creators, and organisations, WhatsApp will allow handles to be claimed that match existing Instagram or Facebook accounts where possible, while usernames associated with well-known public figures and celebrities will be automatically reserved to prevent impersonation.

The new handles can be up to 35 characters long, must follow specific naming rules, and can be updated, changed, or removed whenever the user pleases. It is worth noting that existing chats will remain completely unaffected; current contacts will continue to message you exactly as they do now, and standard features like blocking, reporting, and end-to-end encryption will stay firmly in place. Since the rollout has happened, the users will receive an in-app notification as soon as username reservations become available in their specific region.
