The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma to the Allahabad High Court following what has been described as an “adverse report” against him.
The decision has gained attention after media reports claimed that a large sum of unaccounted cash was allegedly discovered at his official residence following a fire incident.
Justice Varma, who has an extensive legal career, was initially appointed as a judge in the Allahabad High Court before being transferred to the Delhi High Court in 2021. The transfer recommendation has sparked speculation regarding the reasons behind the move, especially given the allegations surrounding the cash discovery.
According to a report, the incident unfolded after a fire broke out at Justice Varma’s official bungalow. At the time of the fire, he was reportedly not in Delhi, and it was his family members who alerted the fire brigade and police.
After the fire was extinguished, officials allegedly found a significant amount of cash inside one of the rooms. The recovery of the cash was officially documented, adding to the controversy surrounding the judge.

Justice Yashwant Varma was born on January 6, 1969, in Allahabad. He completed his BCom (Hons) from Hansraj College, Delhi University, before pursuing LLB from Rewa University, Madhya Pradesh. He embarked on his legal career in 1992, specializing in constitutional law, taxation, and corporate regulations.
His judicial career began with his appointment as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2014. In 2016, he was elevated to a permanent judge.
Before his appointment to the bench, he had served as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and held the position of chief standing counsel for Uttar Pradesh. He was later transferred to the Delhi High Court in 2021.
The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, has formally recommended Justice Varma’s transfer to the Central government. While no official statement has been made linking the cash discovery to his transfer, the move is widely seen as a consequence of the controversy.
