Bhaderwah, famed as ‘Mini Kashmir’ for its pristine beauty, meadows, lakes, mountains and valleys is also called the lavender capital of India for its cultivation of best quality lavender flowers.
It is now becoming one of the best offbeat destinations for tourists, including vloggers, offering cool temperatures, and picturesque landscapes.
In 2022, Bhaderwah celebrated its first-ever lavender festival in a bid to promote lavender farming among locals.
While the plains endure a severe heatwave and traditional tourist spots are overcrowded, "tourist demands have become more specific this year," said Muzzafar Farooq, who runs a travel agency in Srinagar.
The lavender farms, renowned for their sprawling fields of vibrant purple blooms, have emerged as popular destinations for travellers seeking to unwind in picturesque locales.
The blooming season lasts typically from late spring to early summer.
Agri-tourism activities further enhance visitor experience at lavender farms. Guided tours provide insights into lavender farming techniques and include tastings of lavender-infused products, such as oils, soaps, and culinary delights.
The rise of social media has contributed significantly to the popularity of the farms.
Also referred to as the birthplace of India's purple revolution, Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district is experiencing a boom in lavender farming under the 'one district, one product' scheme with the government, Army and institutions supporting its production.
The Centre also designated lavender as a 'Doda brand product' to promote the exotic plant, aiming to help agri startups, entrepreneurs and farmers associated with its cultivation under the Aroma Mission of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
And now, tourism is getting a boost too.
Picturesque scenes of lavender fields have become Instagram sensations, attracting influencers and travellers seeking unique, natural backdrops for their content creation.
As global travel trends continue to emphasise wellness, nature, and unique experiences, lavender farms are poised to remain sought-after destinations for tourists across the country.
On offer is a sensory escape into fields of fragrant lavender, coupled with opportunities for relaxation and education.
