The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, predicting moderate to heavy rains across the region on Monday, December 1. As of Monday morning, the remnants of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah have further weakened into a depression.
This comes after the system weakened into a deep depression late Sunday night, centred around 90 kilometres east of Cuddalore, 140 kilometres south-southeast of Chennai, and 80-90 kilometres off the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast at 17:30 IST on November 30.
The IMD anticipates the system will move northwards parallel to the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts and gradually weaken further into a depression by noon today. Under the influence of the system’s remnants, a period of unsettled weather is expected across several southern states until Monday.
Heavy rainfall is likely over north Tamil Nadu on December 1 and across coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema until December 2.
Thunderstorms and lightning are very likely in Tamil Nadu, north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema. Similar conditions are forecast for South Interior Karnataka and north interior Karnataka on December 1, and Kerala and Mahe on December 2 and 3.
In northern India, a Yellow Alert remains in place for cold wave conditions in Punjab and Maharashtra, and for fog in Himachal Pradesh. The IMD predicted mainly clear skies in Delhi for the next few days, though accompanied by shallow fog during morning hours.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the national capital recorded an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 301 (Very Poor) at 9 am on Monday.
