Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag-Rajouri, a newly created Lok Sabha constituency after the recently completed delimitation exercise, recorded 51.88 per cent voter turnout on Saturday till 5 pm on a violence-free day, poll officials said.

Although voting began somewhat slowly, the numbers grew substantially amid brisk polling.

At around 1 pm, the constituency recorded around 35 per cent, which went up to 45 per cent by 3 pm.

The figures were likely to go up as there were a good number of voters still waiting for their turn at polling stations.

Segments recording the highest turnout were, Surankot (ST) – 62.65 per cent, Poonch Haveli – 64.19 per cent,  Mendhar – 64.69 per cent, Thanna Mandi (ST) – 65.34 per cent, Nowshera – 65.47 per cent and Rajouri (ST) – 66.09 per cent.

Despite concerns over terrorist attacks, especially in booths near the Line of Control (LOC) with Pakistan, no major incident was reported.

The enthusiasm for elections the Srinagar LS seat, followed by the Baramulla LS seat, have surprised everyone. Experts predict better outcomes in the Anantnag-Rajouri LS seat as well.

As per some earlier reports, the police said that there were attempts made by the terrorists to vitiate the atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir by carrying out attacks on some key security installations.

Amid tight and foolproof security cover, it seems all those plans failed to materialise, and voting went on smoothly.

An official of the election commission said polling was going on smoothly across the constituency, which is spread over four districts: Kulgam, Anantnag, Poonch, and Rajouri.

The assembly segment-wise poll data reveals encouraging voter turnout being recorded throughout the constituency.
Anantnag – 31.21 per cent, Anantnag west – 34.65 per cent,  Budhal (ST) – 64.91 per cent, DH Pora – 55 per cent, Devsar – 41.50 per cent, Dooru – 45.21 per cent, Kokernag (ST) – 50 per cent, Kulgam – 31.99 per cent, Pahalgam – 55.63 per cent, Shangus – Anantnag East – 41.94 per cent, Srigufawara – Bijbehara – 42.40 per cent, and Zainapora – 39.40 per cent.
