Srinagar’s 14.94% turnout by 11 am surpasses overall 2019 figures

Voters queue up at a polling station during the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections at Fakeer Gujri on the outskirts of Srinagar (PTI).

As polling in the Srinagar constituency continues in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Monday, May 13, a 14.94% voter turnout in the first four hours of polling surpassed the total turnout in the 2019 LS polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

Voting began at 7 am in the constituency.

The redrawn Srinagar Lok Sabha seat has a poll percentage of 14.94 as of 11 a.m., according to Election Commission estimates. There are 17.48 lakh eligible voters in Srinagar.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the total turnout for the seat was around 14.43%, compared to 25.86% in 2014.

This time, most assembly seats in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency recorded a higher turnout.

The Kangan assembly section reported 22.68 per cent, Ganderbal 21.44 per cent, Chadoora 22.30 per cent, Chrar-e-Sharief 22.20 per cent, Khansahib 19.70 per cent, and Rajpora 20.86 per cent as of 11 am. However, attendance was in the single digits in Habba Kadal (6.12), Chanapora (8.12), Khanyar (9.43), and Lal Chowk (9.94).

Voters had interesting insights when reporters questioned them.  People exercising their franchise for the first time in Pulwama, Budgam, said they were voting to protect their land rights and jobs, as well as to address concerns such as unemployment, increased drug addiction, and necessities such as improved road infrastructure, power, clean water, and development.

So far, no untoward incidents have been recorded, and no boycott calls have been issued.

This time around, turnout is projected to grow significantly owing to intense campaigns by all political parties in the UT.

Similarly, this Lok Sabha election is the first significant political event in Kashmir after the repeal of Article 370.
